Kitchen Helper

Summary of Duties:

Under the direction of the Cook and/or the Executive Director, assists in the preparation of the meal, and the maintenance of the kitchen and dining area. Assists and facilitates baking projects with the clients.

Specific Duties and Responsibilties:

  • Assist the cook in the preparation of daily meals and snacks
  • Assist the cook to prepare special event meals and snacks in consultation with staff
  • Assist in client baking projects and other activities suitable in the kitchen area
  • Assist to maintain the cleanliness of work areas by cleaning stoves, grills, food preparation equipment and ensures kitchen floors, counters, preparation areas are kept clean, safe and orderly
  • Assists in setting and cleaning dining area as needed
  • Assists clients to participate in appropriate activities and encourages that participation
  • Participates in volunteer and in-service development programs when appropriate
  • Respects that all information about the clients and the Centre is strictly confidential
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of Day Centre policies and procedures
Special Qualifications:

  • Special interest in frail, elderly and challenged persons
  • Patience, ability to listen, maturity and tact
  • Ability to work cooperatively with staff and other volunteers
  • Willingness to learn and adhere to the philosophy and objectives of the Centre
  • Willingness to obtain a Food-handling Certificate


Program Assistant

Summary of Duties:

Under the direction of the designated coordinator of volunteers and/or the Executive Director, assists in the implementation of the recreation/activity program.


Specific Duties and Responsibilties:

  • Assist the program workers and nurse with the execution of the daily activities, participate in the activities as appropriate, and ensure that all clients are encouraged to participate to the best of their ability
  • Visit with the clients individually at the Centre, adding a personal dimension without involving participants in personal problems or developing personal relationships which could adversely affect the Centre
  • Assist in client baking projects and other activities suitable in the kitchen area
  • Assist to maintain the cleanliness of work areas by cleaning the coffee area, doing dishes as necessary, wiping tables and chairs, vacuuming, and ensuring the proper storage of all program aids
  • Assists with crafts, recreational activities, sing-a-longs, exercises, walking program, bus trips, meals, etc.
  • Provides reassurance as needed and personal assistance as required for client safety
  • Participates in volunteer and in-service development programs when appropriate
  • Respects that all information about the clients and the Centre is strictly confidential
