Writers Helping Writers
The Canadian Authors Association, Victoria & Islands Branch meets on the 
fourth Friday of the month, except June to August, from 12 - 2 PM at the

Victoria School of Writing Postcard Story Competition:
First Prize:  full tuition to the Victoria School of Writing, 15 - 18 
July (value $395).
Second Prize:  two tickets to a Manulife International Writer's Festival 
event.
Postcard stories must be unpublished and 300 words or less.  Entry fee 
$2.00.  Entries must be hand delivered to the Victoria School of 
Writing's Info-Fair between 12 - 3 PM, on 10 May, at First United Church 
at the corner of Balmoral and Quadra Streets.  Mailed entries will not be

Celebrate Victoria's Writing Scene at the Literary Info-Fair:
Forty local publishers and writers' groups will gather at the First 
United Church Hall, 932 Balmoral, on Saturday 10 May from 12 - 3 PM.  
It's a one-stop Literary Information Fair sponsored by the Victoria 
School of Writing as part of the week long celebration of the arts. Forty 
publishers and writers' services, blue-pencil critiques, storytelling, 
live music, Central American food, postcard fiction competition.  Contact

The Victoria School of Writing
will take place this year on 15 - 19 July.  An intensive workshop 
experience in poetry, fiction, children's literature, playwriting, 
storytelling with P.K. Page, one on one consultations, open mikes and 
public readings for four full days.  Writers in residence include:  P.K. 
Page, Patricia Young, Terence Young, Linda Rogers, Gail Anderson-Dargatz, 
Michael Kenyon, Charles Tidler, Julie Lawson and Margaret Dyment.

The Manulife Financial Literary Arts Festival returns to Victoria for its 
fourth season this 15 - 18 May, featuring 12 illustrious novelists and 
poets from around the world.  Guest writers will include Ursula LeGuin 
and local favourite novelist Jonathan Raban, Lorna Crozier, as well as 
Australian rave Tim Winton.  A great opportunity for turning the personal 
world of books into an exciting community experience.  There will also be 
readings and discussions.  A chance for local writers to share 
perspectives with visiting writers who work in difference genres,

Visual Arts


Visual Arts Development Award
The Vancouver Foundation has just introduced a new award for visual 
artists who are learning a new skill or way of working in traditional or 
contemporary methods.  Any visual art medium is eligible including 
basketry, beadwork, ceremonial regalia, clay, computer generated images, 
drawing, fabric, fibre, film, glass, ink and brush, installation, light, 
metal, mixed media, multimedia, organic materials, painting, performance 
art, photocopy art, photography, print making, sculpture, video, and wood.
The award is for artists who have lived in British Columbia for a least 
one year and who are learning or exploring a new art form but not now 
registered at a school or educational institution.
Beginning or more experienced artists who are learning new techniques or 
ways of working through self study or from a more experienced artist or 
mentor, are elibible to apply.
Awards are between $3,000 and $5,000.  The deadline for applications is

offers a Six Week Immersion Program, held annually in May and June.  This

FIRED-UP!
Contemporary works in clay.  13th annual show held Saturday 24 May and 
Sunday 25 May, 10 AM - 5 PM, at the Metchosin Community Hall.  Fired-Up 
originated in 1985 with a group of Vancouver Island clay artists.  Every 
year since then it has had an annual exhibition to show exploratory works 
in clay and to develop an increase in public awareness of the ceramic 
arts.  It is a wonderful opportunity to meet and speak with the artists 
and experience a variety of work of the highest calibre.  For information

The CACGV and the Greater Victoria Public Library collaborate to provide 
an opportunity for entry level artists to hang their work in a public

TAPIS and the Cool Aid Community Tapestry.
In the spirit of Christine Neil a TAPIS founding member who died of 
cancer in 1993, the groupi is pursuing a community tapestry project.  The 
tapestry is being designed and woven in conjunction with the Cool Aid 
Society, a community social aid society.  The production of the tapestry 
will occur during the spring and summer of 1997 in a series of venues in 
Victoria.  The first venue will be in the Cool Aid Society building, 467

Fairbank Calligraphy Society
hold their sixteenth anual raffle and exhibition from 5 - 11 May at 712

O CANADA EXHIBITION
Send a postcard, photograph or create a work of art for this mural which 
will be exhibited in Victoira and other Canadian venues.  The work must 
be unframed, in any language or medium.  Maximum size restriction is 245 
x 150 mm.  Deadline for submission is 1 June, but please submit earlier 
if possible.  Or mail a photograph which will be recycled onto a mural.  
There is no fee, no jurors, all works suitable for hanging will be 
included.  Works cannot be returned.  However you will receive the names 
and addresses of all participants, an overview picture of the exhibition 
and your work will become part of a permanent collection for exhibition 
across Canada.

Musical Arts


The Victoria Choral Society
with Conductor Michael Gormley presents "A Choral Bouquet" with special 
guests Glenlyon-Norfolk Junior Girls' and Boys' Choirs on Saturday 10 
May, at St. Andrew's Cathedral, Blanshard and View, at 8 PM. Tickets: $12 
adult/$10 Student/Senior.  The VCS is donating all proceeds from this 
concert to support the ongoing work of Victoria Women's Transition House.

This band will join the Reynolds Secondary School Senior Band to present 
a musical tribute to Howard Denike at Reynolds Secondary School, 14 May 
at 7:30 PM.  Admission is by donation and all proceeds will go towards 
the Howard Denike Memorial Bursary at University of Victoria School of Music.

Belfry Theatre
Roy Surette, incoming Artistic Director for the Belfry Theatre and

holding general auditions for Vancouver Island actors on 13 and 14 May at

one piece may be a song, however no piano or accompanist will be
