BRIEF HISTORY:
The only Anglican Church at Shawnigan Lake was built in 1913 on a hill overlooking the north end of the lake by the son of the first clergyman, Reverend Jack Aitken.
There was only a trail up to the site for All Saints Church and all of the lumber and building materials were hauled up by winch and man power. The parishioners also had to climb the slope for services.
In 1938 it was decided to relocate the church to the village and so the building was sawn into sections and transported down to its present location where a belfry was later added.
Later, when the congregation joined the Cobble Hill church, All Saints was put up for sale with the stipulation that it could be used for arts, antiques or books but not for food services or housing.
In 1983, Frank and Nancy Roseborough of Victoria and Shawnigan Lake purchased the property and after renovations and the installation of a new bell from a family mill in Ontario, opened it as a gallery for local artists and crafts people.
In 1989, Shawnigan Lake artist Noel Bliss had the idea to form an artists group with the gallery as its showplace; and so it was that by 1990 the Shawnigan Artists Group had its first show at the "Auld Kirk Gallery". (Scottish for old church).
They have three major shows at the gallery during the year, in the spring, summer and winter.
Artwork changes monthly and also features many other artists and groups.
